E-Tip:
Ouch, Where Are My Shoes?
40% of injuries during natural disasters involve stepping on broken glass - cut feet. Keeping a pair of sturdy shoes under the bed would reduce that percentage significantally. When the earthquake happens in the middle of the night (as they always happen at night and on the weekends), make sure to put your shoes on before you do anything else. Protecting yourself is your first step in survival!

CERT Picnic 9/21
The date has been picked, the caterer booked (and can we just say YUM!) Sunday, September 21st from 11-3 is the CERT picnic for anyone and everyone who has taken San Rafael's CERT class (yes, DART too). OES is hosting this event for each of you who has taken the time to get CERT trained. Come meet fellow neighbors and learn about what other neighborhoods are doing to organize their teams and prepare themselves. Advanced Training: We'll be offering an advanced training on the topic of leadership during the picnic.
Guest speakers will also be part of the fun. Save the date and we hope to see you out there! We'll be asking for RSVPs closer to 9/21.

Blue LogoNew Emergency Information Hotline
The City of San Rafael has launched an emergency information hotline at 485-5070. At the time of a major emergency, residents may dial this hotline to get information on road closures, shelter designations, evacuation routes, and other information related to the incident. This number does not take the place of 911. It still remains that if you have a life threatening emergency you dial 911. The new hotline is another way that the city is providing a channel for our residents to find out about important emergency information. Store the number in your phone so you have it when you need it.

SRFD Type 3 EngineSan Rafael Enhances Firefighting Force
A new "Type III Engine" will soon be in service with the San Rafael Fire Dept. to respond to wildland fire incidents. The 4WD vehicle is readily identified by its higher carriage and shorter wheel base, features which make it specifically designed to function in off-road and other hard-to-get-to environments. The Type III carries over 500 gallons of water and foam, and has two high pressure pumps. This apparatus in an important addition to the SRFD fleet and significantly improves the department's readiness to provide front line fire suppression in the abundant grassy and forested areas that surround many homes and other structures throughout the City.

jandj3 Cheers For Our Volunteers
If you've taken a CERT or Get Ready class in the last few years you know some of our stellar volunteers that help OES with our mission to prepare and protect San Rafael. In June, Jack Brandon and John Hansen received a volunteer recognition award and resolution from the Mayor and the City Council on behalf of the City for their dedication, passion, and tireless efforts that they bring to our disaster preparedness programs. Thanks guys - we're lucky to have you as part of our team!
Blue LogoCERT Trailer
The CERT trailer has been born! Thanks to Davis Sign Co. our DART trailer is now sporting a fresh new CERT look with new signage. Supplies are being stocked within the trailer so neighborhood CERT teams can use the trailer for trainings and exercises. If you'd like to find out more about using the trailer for a drill in your neighborhood, contact our office
at 458-5002.
Got Batteries And Water?
Are the batteries in your smoke alarms working? Have you tested your smoke alarms lately? How about extra batteries for your flashlights and radios and enough water for yourself and your family in the event of a disaster? The first two things during disasters to fly off of the shelves at the store are batteries and water. Acquiring these items ahead of time are simple things that each of us can do to help ourselves, but let's be honest, many of us don't. We need to make the time and make it a priority to do these things to be prepared, even if we simply start with buying extra batteries for the flashlight and emergency radios one month, and then buying water the next. Break it down step by step. Would you rather wait until the disaster has struck and you are fighting with the masses for what you need...we didn't think so!
